Ok, I know I've not blogged in a while, I've kept meaning to but just not had the time really tbh and I forgot my login details on here :O
But I just heard a story on news round (cbbc) that I refuse to believe, or at least that I hope would never ever be true, yet probably inevitable with how technology is progressing I suppose.
Something about some box you can buy and watch any film the day of its release rather than going to the cinema??
I have several points to make for and against this,
for: yes its more comfortable at home to watch something with your feet up and a nice warm blanket and cheap bag of popcorn you didn't have to pay through the roof for, when your at home some people may be more open to watching new films.
HOWEVER personally I think if people are at home watching films they will be less likely to see these new releases, why watch something new when theres an old favourite sitting up there on the shelf? or other films you've bought but not watched yet? Plus then you miss out on the trailers at the cinema and the posters so you are less likely to know about all of the new films coming out so make less effort to even find them on ur posh new box meaning you don't get to see as many new films, but this isn't just about the individual but people as a whole some people will make the effort, on the whole no people wont which has several downsides,
1. less of a knowledge of films in general which is a same as its a beautiful industry which should be appreciated x, 2. less money spent on film which is bad for the industry as a whole
Other downsides to if this box thing are many:
less box office competition, part of the fun of filmmaking and marketing is the box office challenge, will your film beat the next etc, with the box will it be possible to analyse properly how many people have seen the film? it takes away from the audiences buzz about a film to see how many people will see which film particularly on the V day and Halloween releases Saw vs Paranormal Activity etc,
part of this point though on its own a separate point is the money issue, do they pay for the box per year? month? week? or film? if not per film then how is it ensured the appropriate companies etc get the money they are due? x And even if it is per film at the cinema people pay for themselves to go in per person, if its on a box thing then how can you tell how many people are watching the film, one you don't get accurate figures for box office figures (IF they can work it out by the box thing they cant count how many people there are in the room)
and also then its glorified piracy, isn't it? Sharing files when you've only paid for one viewing to show to many people? Whats to stop me from say paying a tenner for the latest film out to watch and just having 10 people over paying a £1 each? good in a way yes if people did this it means more people see the film so its good for the industry in a way as in more people watching it, HOWEVER for the film companies themselves its a terrible terrible idea, though good for the customer film companies majorly loose out on money like this, has this not been considered how bad it could be for filmmakers? x meaning less money to make films which means our industry just spirals and spirals x Not only this but it makes it easier for people to record the film at home and upload online to make money from it or to just share the file which again takes money from film companies, and the quality at home recording would be better than when people manage to smuggle in a camera to the cinema which means even less people paying to watch a film as the quality difference isn't as worth it to the general public. HOW is piracy on this extreme level a good thing, personally I don't think piracy is ALWAYS the worst thing for the industry, if I see a clip from a film released online and think it will be a good film for that often i'll pay at the cinema to watch it in proper sound and visual quality, its been a deciding factor sometimes, say like when the first 10 mins of Piranha 3D got leaked on a horror site, from the trailer it was a miss it film for me, but out of curiosity I watched them 10 mins purely as they were right in-front of me, and judging by them I did end up going and paying to see it in the end, not a bad film :) x
Going to the cinema is a shared experience, from a psychological point of view its a very good thing to have these shared experiences, some people lets face it are lonely, they like to go out and feel included in a group and they may do this by joining like minded people in watching a film at the cinema ok its not sitting down having a conversation with some one but its still social even though you don't know the people in the row in-front of you its still strange to think your similar to them in some way in that you both choose the same film, ok a silly argument you may think but for some people this is the reality, and sometimes you can very easily meet new people at the cinema in line to get tickets or cueing to go into the latest blockbuster its easy to get chatting to new people and make new friends x
On a v related point but one that applies to a lot more people, (the people who do have friends who will accompany them to the cinema) going to the cinema with friends is always a good idea, you share in watching a film you both/all choose and get to chat about it afterwards the shared experience brings you closer together, ok it may seem odd but its true think about how many random discussions about films you've had with friends discussing diff opinions, even if on a simple level, I'm sure simpler than I usually discuss with people (ahh i love films too much), and as for the whole cinema date idea, well I've spoken to someone recently who hated this idea of a first date, it was just a random discussion about film and he said how much he hated going to the cinema though liked watching films. (strange boy), anyway I think its the best first date, you can see what sort of films they like (for me film tells me a lot about a person), it means that your both concentrating on something for a while so theres no awkward silences during the time your in there and if there is when your out hmm what to chat about what to chat about, surely then its easy to talk about the film that you've just watched to break them silences and to see if you get on and agree on things, ok film seems to be a pretty basic thing to be talking about to see if you get on but if you cant have a decent conversation about a normal every day thing then how are you going to get on in the long run? x so its a good way to get an idea if you like the person and their opinions on whatever, a lot of issues are bought up in film sometimes ethical, political, choices that you'd choose to make or not make in different situations, when you really look at film it can tell you a lot about a person, with the whole box thingy yes u can still get that sort of discussion going, but how often are you going to randomly invite someone over to watch a film at yours unless your already close with them so then its not a first date thing for e.g or if it was, awkwardness having someone you may not know well in your house and oh dear when your mum walks through the door with the shopping and starts chatting and then pulling out the baby pics :/ i think not.
Also cinema is a cheap day or night out, you dont want to be stuck indoors all the time, however its a few hours of amusement which leads to a lot of discussion and more amusement and though prices have risen and its cheaper to get a dvd at home at least its a cheap time out of the house as you get sick of being indoors all of the time sometimes, everyone does.
Also when watching a film at home its a very mixed bag with the family or friends, some like to chat while watching others like to sit and concentrate which can mean a lot of arguments at home, where as at the cinema you stay quiet out of respect for everyone else in the screen even if your a talker, which means less arguments and more appreciation of the film your watching.
My final point is jobs, people are paid to serve popcorn (and other snacks), sell tickets, check tickets, clean, ok simple jobs but employment non the less, good honest employment people working to make their money, and with unemployment allready v high in this economic climate getting rid of these jobs, ok it may only be 20 in every town for e.g but you multiply that by however many cinemas there are across the country, thats a lot of jobs gone and a lot more unemployment and a lot more people fighting to get a job -and with costs of education rising a lot more people with lesser qualifications fighting for jobs as well as the qualified people fighting for jobs, is this a good thing?? errr NO, and then so more people on benefits so higher taxes and/or less money to go round on benefits and lets face it its difficult enough to get by sometimes with a job let alone on crappy benefits that you can hardly afford to live on :/ x and if raised in a home with a family on benefits your more likely to end up on them also yada yada yada, blah blah blah.
In conclusion is watching films at home a good idea, yes on dvd or once its out then paying to watch on demand fine, but if you get rid of the cinema experience in this way there are many negative effects for individuals, the film industry and even society as a whole!! Whats your views? x
You think you know film?

FB add that P-d me right off, DOWN WITH RE-MAKES!!!
I saw this a few days ago on my fb screen and print screened it.... can I just say WTF?? I am actually soo soo soooooo angry at the American studios, constantly taking a famed foreign film and turning it into crap and still claiming it half the time to be their own work!!
"Best American horror film of the last 20 years" HOW on EARTH is it an American film when its a re-make of Sweedish classic Let The Right One In, ok I've not personally seen this re-make though I will say the trailer does look good and like the Americans have put a very different spin on it however it is NOT an American film.
This trend keeps growing and growing, first it started with the Japanese film industry, Ringu, Ju-on (the Grudge), Chakushin Ari (One Missed Call), then it was China's turn to be massacured with the Eye films, though I do believe at least one of the Pang brothers was involved in this re-make project and Jessica Alba doesn't do that bad of a job in it it still falls in comparison to the original.
Then was Korea's turn with films such as The Tale Of 2 Sisters (aka The Univited), ok I'm not a big fan of the Korean horror industry, they are GOOD at lighting, set design and scoring HOWEVER all the techniques are much more suited to romance rather than horror, I found myself soo bored by the Korean version I turned it off halfway through, dont get me wrong I like progressive horrors with some major drama and compelling characters in them, but this just takes wayyyy too long to get into and the scares are basically a girl with long hair crawling onto a bed... wow... never seen that before in an Asian film! lol but its done also so painfully slowly it couldn't even scare a child if I showed my 9 year old bro Leo it he would of just either got really bored with it or laughed his dead off. I know Hitchcock (ok onto a british guy for a sec) said to shoot your romances like horrors and your horrors like romances, and I do really like that statement, but seriously?? Ok back to topic, its not a good film to start with and the re-make is just pitiful and as for the casting of Arielle Kebbel in the re-make, dont get me wrong I do like her, but seriously just stick to the teen comedies n rom-coms aka what your good at, some people just dont work at all when they cross genres.
Now Sweeden even is taking a bashing, ok not famed particularly for horror but for their sweet stories about personal growth and showing things that question your morality, ever heard of The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo? Of course you have, who hasn't with the books flying off shelves and the film selling out all over the place across the world since its release in 2009 - YUP 2009 and guess what? http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1913734/ YUP re-make allready completed!! set to come out 2011, hopefully America will take a kick up the ass with this one as people who have seen the original which is actually a large number this time will slate it, I just only hope that people who hear of the American version dont choose to watch that over the Sweedish superior version just because of the subtitle issue :/ x ok I'm not necessarily a fan of certain lanuages, Sweedish is a pain to watch and listen to for me but hey I loved the original, its got soo many elements to it and its shocking, ok in places it does go a little to far in my opinion buy hey filmmaking is about breaking down borders and expression and creativity, something America severly lacks, the largest country in the world yet one of the most lacking in creativity :/ x. Also the cast of this is just a monstrousity really! Who appear in some really bad films, can I just say Rooney Mara, WHAT THE HELL??? How did she go from appearing as tiny tinyyyyyy lil backing characters like in Urban Legend (one of America's most original slashers... however it was based on legends that have existed for years and had many films made about them -_- ) from being in soo many fairly high profile films in the last few years, I dont understand it and I DONT like it. Like her playing Nancy in the re-make of NOES (Nightmare on Elm Street to you non-horror fans), I swear, I wanted to tell Jake Earl Herly or however you spell his name coz frankly I DONT care about him, other than the fact he ruined the iconic image that is Freddy Krueger, to piss off and let me slash her up in that film her acting was soo bad, as was most of the cast, they have 2 decent members in the NOES 2010 cast Katie Cassidy, who they kill off first, wasting her talent and Aaron Yo, though I cant even see him on cast list he appears for about 2 mins on a V log thing.
Ok I don't like re-makes in genral, as you can see by my (believe me V concervative short) rant about NOES 2010, however I dont mind when a country re-makes its own film, I really dont, it drives attention back to the originals most of the time and I think its good to bring old classics to a new generation, and whats wrong with taking something and attempting (even if you fail) to make it better? HOWEVER when you take an idea from another country and re-make it and parade it around as if its something original its a NO NO, just because the other countries aren't as rich as America doesn't mean they shouldn't get recognition for their creativity and brillence, even if they do actually get known to be a re-make some lazy ass people cba to read subtitles so get a toned down less interesting version of the film and that is then their impression and expirence of the original country's film industry, and I think thats unfair.
In short... DOWN WITH RE-MAKES! oh and now I actually can buy stuff online with latest bank card I plan to get a T-shirt that says that on V soon
ok I just spent 15 mins looking to try and find image of T-shirt i wanted n now i cant find it :/ x

Brillent, the pyrotechnics weren't over or under- done which is common with actions, the set was good, lighting could have been better, Heath Ledger did brillently, sumwhat unsure how i feel about the guy who actually played batman, there was some subtle CGI which was used very well unlike in some actions like hell boy 2, the CGI in it is crap, but the costumes are brillent true to form for the director, The plot was very interesting and compelling, I couldnt take my eyes off the screen, the car chases were good but not the best i've seen. Overall I'd give it a 75/100 on my rating system all cats out of 20, 16 for CGI allthough not alot used and is barely noticeable, 12 for casting, mainly due to Heath Ledger, the full 20 for script absolutely brillent, 16 for camera angles and 11 for lighting, but i have been a little leanent with my grading of this film due to how much i like it. It is a long film but you dont even notice the time go, usually i eat popcorn in about 10 minutes of the film starting onmy own, i was with my aunt and it was near the end of the fim before we'd finnished.
Good Movies??????????

I would sugest anything else with ben stiller if you like one of his films, maybe you would like adam sandler films too. For other comedies I wold suggest There's somthing about Mary and anything else by them directors as they have got to be the two best comedy film makers there are.
If you like things that are sweet but not too gushy i would v highly reccomend The Ultimate gift, it takes a while to get into but is a really good movie and v moving, i v rarely cry at films, i barely cried at titanic and this one got be blubbing at the end. Drew Fuller is really good in this one.
If you like slasher flicks Scream is an absolute must, even if your just a horror fan this one will turn you into a slasher fan its one of the best horrors ever made in my opinion.
The Butterfly Effect is a v good film, highly controversial so if you like films that are outside the box you'll like this, dont be put off by the fact that Ashton Kutcher plays the lead he is actually v serious in this one and acts it brillent. I
f you like action films go for ones produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, in my opinion he is the only guy that does justice to action films for e.g pirates of the carribean and beverly hills cop.
Hope I've helped :)

An iteresting movie needs to be believeable and have a good plot and charecters, there must be 1 or 2 funny parts or lines, some sort of action like a fight scene or even a subtle as crepy music, it needs a mystery or mission, somthing to be resolved, romance can be as subtle as a pircing stare that lasts a second, friendship and bravery and a good villan or invisable evil! Also visual effects popular music scenes not too long but create a eeling of suspence, some perfect movies are: pirates of the carribaen, lord of the rings, harry potter 3, holes and oceans 11
Horror movie poll...?
Scream or Friday The 13th (original)
Jason or Freddy
Michael or Jason
Michael or Freddy
Jessica Biel or Amanda Righetti
Wes Craven or Eli Roth
Hostel or Saw
Rob Zombie or John Carpenter
Jodie Foster or Anthony Hopkins
Jason or Freddy

(my answer to this)Scream DEFINATELY, the original Friday the 13th is basically like a kids dont do this or u'll get killed film and tbh it shows little and is boring and dull, where as Scream is suprising, funny and the killer is soo obvious it makes u think it CANT be Billy so making it even more of a shock when it is! Also the death scenes are good, and it is BRILLENTLY cast, Randy seems to act as the writers voice to his fans in this film saying "the rules" also i love the touch of having the Janitor in sort of Freddy Krueger type uniform and actually being called Freddy (coz it references Nightmare on Elm street written of course by Wes Craven director of Scream). The re-make of Friday the 13th is good though, however i would still say Scream over that even
For me its GOTA be Freddy, the films are just better (- number 2) and the idea of someone that stalks your dreams is just brillent, never dying because the victims MAKE him exist through their fear, its simply brillent, where as the killer which kills with a pointy object and never seems to die has been done a BILLION times over and is a lot less scary.
Jason, Michael Myers is OK but the films are just soo predictable and idk i just dont like Michael. Jason is iconic, yes most of the films are crap yet he still more iconic than Michael, and the hocky mask is just cooler than the odd mask Michael has
Freddy-he just RULES
r u kidding?? fine out of them Jessica Biel
hmm oh thats a tough one...NOT, Its GOTA be Wes, he used SOO many things that changed film, the harsh colours in NOES i havent seen such harsh colours used and i havent seen the particular colours for fear scenes before he started to use them he invented, or at least furthered the concept what i like to call the "fear colour". Also he wrote and directed LOADS more sucessful films than Eli with better plots, crepier scenes, scarier killers and more original and iconic ideas. Yes Eli does have some hits but he is fairly new to the game in comparison and i've seen things like Cabin Fever and Hostel before those films the ideas have been used before, though Eli does them better he is still nowhere near Wes Craven, though i must say Craven pisses me off lately Scream 3 was a NO NO and now he is going for number 4 tut tut
Well the first Saw is a little slow and not gory enough for me, so Hostel for the originals however the Saw SERIES trumps Hostel 1and 2 by far, its cleaver, interesting and when you think you know it all things turn on its head. It is V smart, often V well cast and dispite there being 5 so far they are still popular, good and there is some demand for more of them
Hmmmmmmmm, now u ask a difficult one. Rob Zombie is a legend with a MASSIVE fan base, he is brillent and he is a darn good singer too, he is a lil creepy with his films but thats what they are all about! Odd strange, creepy and wacky with dark humour. Though he hasnt made/written many films the ones he has are iconic and V well known. Hmm, for horror i would probably have to say Zombie for reasons above, HOWEVER as an overall director i would say John Carpenter, i like his directing style, his films have good stories and keep u captivated throughout though they arent scary, for e.g Vampires is a V good film, interesting, compelling, has a lot of action n stunts in the film, well cast, yet it isnt scary so i cannot say him above Zombie for horror.
hmm well tbh, Hopkins though v menacing i find v annoying, and i find some of his films..dull (please dont bring on the masses of angry fans this is just my personal opinion) he has a LOT of films and v credited..possibly OVER-credited for some of his work like Silence of the Lambs. Where as Jodi Foster is also slightly annoying and over credited i find she draws my attention more, though she ALLWAYS acts all scared and suprised which puts me off her. Overal i would say Jodi mostly coz of Contact is a V good film and I feel she does V well in that alone, however for horror because of his air of menace how could i NOT chose Antony Hopkins? he is a legend, though not my favourite by any means

random formspring q/a's to do with media in some way or another

Who's the most underrated actor?
Hmm, Jensen Ackles is very underrated as he is mostly just a television actor though also Adam Sandler, he is credited as a good comedian yes but no one really sees his acting work or thinks about him as an actor rather than comedian n yet he is brillent as an actor like in Click, watch it again-seriously watch it again, watch it really closely he does act like the concerned father as the movie moves on but as he is mostly comedy at first he is severly underated for that performance, those are the 2 main ACTORS, though for actresses Ali Larter is underrated for some of her performances and Abigail Breslin for ALL of her performances she may be young but she is the best dam actress of this centuary!!! xyou forgot the book :P (that I would have if I was deserted on an island)
oh whoops lol, ermm hell sod it for the fun of it its gota be Battle Royal, one because I haven't read it yet and 2 thats set mostly on a deserted island and everyone kills each other and they are about our age :) so awesomeness :) I HIGHLY reccomend the films (they are japanese) the first is considered by many people in the industry as one of the best action films ever made as well as one of Japans best over overal films.UPDATE: I have since read the book, and wow, just wow, the book is more political than the film, and the film is bold enough as it is, pure brillence actually both of them, its difficult to say which I prefer, though I would of like to of seen a film closer to the book though the film itself cannot be knocked in my opinion
Freddie Kruger or Michael Myers?
hahahahahhahaha SOMEONE clearlyyyyyyyyy doesn't know me, Freddy all the way :D :D :D :D Michael Myers original Halloweeens were crapppp, Rob Zombies re-imaginings ftw though but NO ONE is as iconic as Freddy and lets face it killing people in their sleep? a gd idea in horror films better than just the unkillable killer but the one u can never escape , unless u make like 9 , 10 never sleep againnnnnnnnnnn xWhat do you think was the greatest invention in your lifetime?
The internet, both the greatest and worst invention ever in my opinion. Greatest as it makes it easier to keep in contact with friends and find out information and buying things cheaply, but worst as it makes people lazy and because of all the hate on the internet or just evil stuff like sites encouraging aneroxia or illeagle sites that u cant just screen out all of them, that stuff is bad, it makes some things too accessableWhat's your favorite city?
well though i've never been there i'd say Los Angles as its where Hollywood is though above that i'd say San Francisco, i've allways wanted to go there, some of my fave shows have been shot there n it looks like such an interesting place, good music scene, the fog makes it sort of mysterious, beautifffuuuuuul area too xthough out of all the cities i've been to London, there's allways something to do somehwere and always good to see the sights n old buildings n stuff x

hmm, Chelsea Lately- to ask her about how to be a good interviewer and tips and such, then Jensen Ackles- ask him for his number ;) haha jk i wish x probably ask him about Supernatural and films n such and if he is anything like his character Dean Winchester, and third guest would be Pink as she is just awesomeeeee and i'd LOVE to meet her n i could bring Harminder along to interview her with me so she would be happy :) xIf you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would you choose?
Vogue haha lol x -na just kidding, its gota be total film or empire as director of the year or something, or if Bloody Disgusting ever publish as magazine rather than website then that would be the one :) xWhat was your favorite movie as a child?

of course i love it Dan i introduced u to them :) xCSI essay
Ok wrote this near start of year 10, one of my favourite essays for english I must say, I'd never really watched CSI before then but then I did get into it for a while after we had to watch these 2 episodes to analyse for cw, I know its little league analysis compared to what i've learnt since then, but still this is what I COULD do then, now im better, let me into Gloucestershire and I will prove to you that even where I am now is just the begining
English coursework: Compare the openings of two episodes of CSI New York .
CSI is possibly one of the most influential programs on television today. The franchise has 30-40 million viewers and introduced the so called "CSI shot" (in which the camera is zoomed in on something and the actors talk over the top). In this essay I will examine and compare the opening scenes of two episodes from the latest program in the franchise, CSI New York. The episodes I will compare are "Grand Murder at Central Station" and "City of the Dolls", both from the second season.
I will begin by examining the episode "Grand Murder at Central Station" as it was the first of the two episodes to be aired. In this episode there are many establishing shots of New York . These represent the city as being very busy and set a very fast paced scene. The ticking music creates suspense as it seems to be counting down to something dramatic happening.
When the scene moves inside Grand Central Station, there are many shots of feet and music starts rising so as to add to the busy atmosphere, as does mise-en scène. A further example would be the business-like suits as if to show people are busy and trying to get to work. However, the character of the little girl in this scene is in contrast with everyone else, as she is wearing bright pink, so she grabs the audience's attention. Also, the constant shots of her and her teddy bear make viewers expect something to happen to her, or for her to be of some significance later on, particularly when the camera zooms out from her at a high angle when she is separated from her mother, as if to add emphasis to the separation. When the audience hear someone scream, it surprises them and also adds to suspense as to what has happened as they at first do not see where the scream is coming from, and if anything will happen to the girl and may make audiences scared for her.
The slow motion on the alkali filled cup when it is falling shows that it is significant to the plot of the episode as it is in contrast with the rest of the scene as there are no other slow motion shots in the scene. The emphasis on the bear throughout the scene shows that it too is important. Also the enhanced sounds of the fizzing places even more emphasis on the fact that something bad has happened and it is a sound that is associated with science reactions as CSI is a scientific program.
Another point I will pick up on is how inside the ambulance the camera angles keep swapping as if from each characters point of view. The constant shots of the heart rate machine add to the viewers’ sense of suspense. When the victim says he saw who attacked him the machine stops and the victim dies, then there is even more suspense as to who did it and what their motive was. This makes viewers want to watch the rest of the episode to find out. Then back inside Grand Central Station at the end of the scene the main detective character makes a significant comment as the music rises and is at its loudest when he says "no witnesses". The question may be raised in viewers’ minds of how it is possible for there to have been no witnesses and if someone actually did see something, and if the case is actually possible to solve, again raising suspense for the rest of the episode.
In the episode "City of the Dolls" New York is not represented as very busy. The flashes of white that go with the music make you pay attention to the “invincible" music. The music is upbeat, but still raises suspense. It does this as people who have seen CSI before or know how the episodes play out, know that the characters or one of them will go from being "invincible" to dead or finding someone dead. As audiences don't know which, they want to keep watching to find out.
The scene is very fast paced, the camera angles keep swapping, an interesting angle is when the camera moves with the snowball and hits against a car window. When the youths run away the camera tracks one of them and as soon as he backs into a shop the music stops so the audience know that something bad is either just about to happen to the character or he will find a body. Then there is tense and scary music playing which sets a tense, creepy atmosphere as does the close-ups and medium shots on the dolls which look scary. When the character sees the corpse the audience hears a scream before seeing the body, which raises suspense of what the audience will see.
Then the scene skips to sometime after the discovery, the camera pans to the right while tracking the detectives, from behind shelves filled with dolls to show that they are still in the shop so this also doubles as an establishing shot, so audiences are aware of the setting. There are several so called "CSI shots" in this scene, for example the fast zoomed in close-ups on the victims hand and on the blood stains with the actors talking over the top, which adds emphasis to the blood and the fact that a crime has taken place. Also in this scene there is a flashback, it has a yellow tone which creates tension as yellow is a very harsh color.
Similarly to the first episode the main detective makes a significant comment. "Something about this little doll was worth dying for" Which like in "Grand Murder at Central Station" raises suspense for the rest of the episode and makes the audience want to watch the episode in its entirety.
Now that I have examined both of the episodes opening scenes I will compare them by first detailing similarities between the episodes then the differences. An obvious similarity is the establishing shots. Although of different things, both episodes show that it is set in New York so is CSI: NY rather than CSI (Set in Las Vegas ) or CSI: Miami .
Both episodes have moments in which the camera moves very quickly, in the first when the man gets burned and the camera swapping in the ambulance, in the second the throwing of the snowballs.
In both episodes the music adds to suspense but in different ways; one with "ticking" music in keeping with the theme, as it sounds like it is counting down to something dramatic. While the other with "invincible" music in complete contrast with the theme as it is upbeat and happy. Another similarity between the episodes and similar to all or most episodes of all three programs in the CSI franchise is lack of motive and lack of suspects in opening scenes, which suggests that the crime is impossible to solve. This adds to suspense and makes viewers watch the rest of the episode. The final similarity is that the main detective makes a significant comment before the opening credits, again to hook the audience.
The first difference is that in "Grand Murder at Central Station" it is morning and there are slow fades but in "City of the Dolls" it is night time and there are fast flashes of white, it is also faster paced than "Grand Murder at Central Station" where there is more build up. The music is obviously very different. One raises suspense as it appears to be counting down to something, the other because of the contrast with the theme, this difference leads me to another, the fact that the beginning of "City of the Dolls" is more light-hearted than the other episode.
In "Grand Murder at Central Station" we see the character of the victim die making the audience feel sympathy for the victim, where as in "City of the Dolls" we just see a character finding the victim which makes the audience wonder why he died and how where as in the other episode the audience knows how the victim died but still didn’t know why.
The camera angles in "Grand Murder at Central Station" are more directly focused on the main characters than in the other episode, as in the other episode audiences see the main detectives from behind the shelves for part of the scene. "City of the Dolls" has not got as wide a range of speeds as the other episode as it has no slow motion shots like the slow motion shot on the cup in the other episode, but "City of the Dolls" uses different colour tones for example, the yellow tone on the flashback, where as the other episode doesn't use different tones. The final difference I will note is that there are no "CSI shots" in "Grand Murder at Central Station" and yet in most episodes of CSI there are "CSI shots".
Overall both of the episodes use a variety of different camera techniques and dramatic devices to keep audiences interested and make viewers want to watch the rest of the episode. I personally believe they both succeed in doing so however, I prefer the beginning of the episode "City of the Dolls" as I like the contrast from the start of the scene to when the corpse is found, as well as the use of the "CSI shots" and the flashback. From analyzing and comparing the two opening sequences, I can see how 30-40 million people watch at least one of the programs in the franchise.
Who wants to have a read of my first ever go at scriptwritting?
Wrote this a few years back the scene just popped into my head, I kinda had a few things in my mind of where it would go after that and I found most of my ideas not to live upto this oppening scene, not bad for work from a year 9 I think, I've not edited it since then though I have had a read through :) enjoy x
Emily script
Opening scene:
(Opening with young Amy sitting in front of mirror you see her reflection first, tense music playing you can see her mouth moving as she is talking into the mirror then the camera twists round to see Amy laughing. Camera outside her room looking in at diagonal angle from low down looking diagonally up, seeing Amy from behind, door slightly ajar, then the mother will come into shot. Camera other side of door as mother puts her head through, camera back to Amy talking into mirror. Camera back on mother who opens the door fully, then camera behind both of them behind mothers shoulder as Amy looks round then back into the mirror. Harsh cold sound and then music stopped. Camera then on mother)
Mother: Amy sweetie, who are you talking to?
(Camera side on Amy)
Amy: My friend, (smiles into mirror while camera pans to mirror reflection and then back)
(Mother looking into mirror see’s normal reflection, looks concerned camera on Amy goes down from focus on her head to shoulders, camera back to mother)
Mother: What’s your friend’s name? (Uncertain smile)
Amy (camera on her as she turns for a second and then side view when she looks back into the mirror): Emily. (Smiles while music gets very very tense and the camera swaps to mother who looks terrified fast zoom to her from full view).
Mother: Where did you get that name? (Sounding scared)
(Amy ignores her still looking into mirror when camera is on her from behind; mother grabs her chair and tries to pull it round, camera side on when mother touches Amy’s check)
Mother: Where did you get that name? (Getting angry). Where!
(Amy just looks into mirror again. Camera on mother again you see her look into the mirror close up on face and then shot getting wider as she backs away she turns and walks out, stops camera skip to medium-close-up as she stops and holds onto the door frame for a second and looks scared and near crying, she walks out camera follows her, then low shot of her feet and legs until she gets on stairs and stops to cry. Camera back in Amy’s room facing mirror only the room reflected back in it big sound camera pans to chair where Amy sat before which is empty, we hear a shout and bang then camera from above the stairs looking downwards Amy not in shot, then we see the mothers body blood coming from her head music starts up, violins in minor key with raining stormy sound we see father from below rush over to her checking her pulse and then breaking down crying, we can hear crying but sound of crying is distorted, violin sound the prominent sound then view on Amy standing at the top of the stairs blank expression camera moving down facing her until diagonally looking up at her then skip to lightning outside)
Opening credits (fast paced rain in background with storm sounds and building tension music).
Essay about pre-production
Essay about Pre-production
Pre-production essay:
Productions either start with an idea or specifications for an idea (for example the broadcaster may be looking for a new children’s breakfast show). But there is a lot of work and considerations that are needed to turn it into a reality. In this essay I will explore what is needed in pre-production.
If you have the initial idea the first thing needed is to develop it a little, however you cannot fully develop an idea unless you know your audience, and this is where the first part of research comes in. Market research is conducted to get a better understanding of the market for the media product, what age group, gender and other social types would be interested in the product and how you can adapt a product to make it suitable to your chosen audience for example if you wanted to make a documentary suitable for middle class people aged 60+ then you would conduct research to find out what they like. Ways of finding out this information includes surveying, observation and focus groups as well as looking at secondary data from research others have conducted however it is important to check sources for reliability and sometimes on personal subjects the honesty of the people involved in research may play a part. Also part of market research is to research the competitions so you can see where other programme makers have went wrong or done well and possibly get ideas for a format from others. For my 3 minute wonder project I conducted surveys utilising the brilliant tool that is the internet which is very good method to get surveys to many people as well as observing people in the process of developing their ideas and asking people about their ideas and what they thought of my idea as my 3MW is based around ideas and inspiration.
The next stage of research is on the topic, makers need to be sure of facts before they begin a script or other planning including interviewees etc. Facts need to be checked so they don’t show false information or be accused of defamation (if the documentary is based around someone or a group) or sued for false facts, or even provide false information that could be harmful to the public. I researched using the internet looking at many different sites and I watched some videos also where people talk about where ideas come from.
After the topic has been researched the makers need to decide on the content of the programme, they need to research any possible contributors so they know in interviews what to ask the interviewees and how much they know about a subject and their opinion. Its also important to know what the target audience think about the interviewee so they get maximum views for example a documentary on teenage musicians may get more interest with a bigger star, for example Justin Bieber may get more teenage girls to view the programme but if all of the interviewees are more appealing to girls and guys don’t like them or listen to them then the programme may lose male viewers. Research on interviewees is easily conducted with celebrities; you could read the magazines, watch entertainment new, and watch previous interviews, with them, for less well known interviewees you can study what they do for example read an authors book and read about what people think of it. Discussion forums are very useful to gauge opinion, as are previously mentioned surveys and focus groups. Also in fictional programming or films it is important to research the Talent, if people aren’t liked then it may not get many views for example a film with an unpopular actor as the lead. Also Talent includes presenters and other people in factual programmes so they also need to be liked for a show to be successful, for example Ant and Dec are very popular. Obviously all contributors and talent need to sign a contract to give their consent to recordings of them being used in the programme. For research on my contributors I looked at their work (Nikki’s video report, Daniel Bradshaw’s photographs and listened to Daniel Page’s music) I also researched them on their Facebook pages (social networking has changed research a lot, many normal people and celebrities use sites such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and others which makes research quick and easy), and looked at photography websites Daniel Bradshaw uses and the website for the studios Daniel Page uses, also researched them through their and my mutual friends.
Other production (content) research needed includes filming locations; they need to consider the suitability of location for the topic and suitability in terms of space for equipment, whether they can gain permission to film, also the cost, background noise and activity and the safety of the location-which goes into risk assessments in planning I will mention later. Contracts need to be signed to agree for permissions to film in any private location such as shopping centres, and in some public areas like the high street or a park consent is needed from the borough council in some cases. I didn’t require permission for my locations as we have permission to film within college- I filmed in the blue room, media corridor and Mac room, and filmed in my own house.
Finally with regards to content music, achieve footage and images need to be researched and you need to find out the copyright owners and gain permission for use of any such material. When you have researched this you need to get written consent for any achieve footage being used and you need to input information onto a music reporting form so that music gets paid for through PRS (Performing Rights Society). I made a photography release form for Daniel Bradshaw to sign so I could use some of his images in my video and I got Daniel Page to sign a consent form for his song (audio consent form) to be used in my video, though I’m currently waiting for him to send me his song.
Then other production research is needed, research of who will be needed to make the programme or film crew wise and how much it cost to employ them for how long they are needed- so you can decide how long you need them for when it comes to planning and budgeting. Also the cost of different equipment is needed to be researched to find the best deals and again for budgeting and to find the best equipment for the particular project for example you may need a dolly in one production but not in another so you need to think what you need for that production specifically to make the programme and for props or background in a scene. Offices and office equipment also need to be researched and paid for so there is a base production people can work from like researchers. Other things that need to be researched cost wise are facilities like studios and editing suites, transport costs for crew, talent and other contributors as well as transporting equipment and what is the quickest easiest cheapest way to travel- travel insurance is also needed for everyone involved and sometimes other special insurances are required for different things in productions for example stuntmen. Also there needs to be some hospitality in most productions, for example catering and in some cases- more in films- trailers for cast, so that needs to be researched too. I used a lot of the research the class conducted when making my budget and thought about what was necessary for my production if I was making it in the real world.
Now I shall move on to what planning is needed in pre-production. There are many parts to planning a production, first is the idea the topic it is based around, you need to develop your idea before you can write a script and plan other things. You can start with brainstorming about the idea and about the audiences interests and then expand ideas from there and see how they can come together.
Budgeting is very important in all productions so you don’t overspend on one thing and run out of money or end up not being able to finish the production. Everything that costs anything must be included, from the equipment, staff and talent right down to the pencils used to storyboard everything costs something and must be paid for within the budget. It is better to leave some money left over from the budget to use if plans have to be changed say for example if you don’t get the necessary shots within one day and need to stay in a hotel near the location overnight. Were given a budget of £30,000 for our 3MW project if were doing it in the real world, within mine I allotted for extras on things just in case things didn’t go to plan or so I had more options, for example I budgeted for 5 photographs to be used in the video yet will probably use only 2 or 3 and I allotted extra money for travel.
Risks assessments need to be carried out before filming starts as it is important to insure all cast, crew, talent, contributors and the public are safe in productions or someone could get seriously hurt or equipment could damaged in some cases which can cause major problems for programme makers. For example loose cables could make someone trip and hurt themselves or more severely pull over equipment damaging equipment and possibly seriously injuring someone like if a hot light were to fall. The aim of risk assessments are to identify the possible risks and how they can be prevented from happening like taping wires down and weighing down lights and other precautions depending on the risk. If equipment is damaged it could halt production for a while or even mean it cannot continue and if someone is injured again it could halt the production or you could be sued for negligence and of course the fact that no one wants people to get hurt. My risk assessment is rather short as I only filmed in a few locations and I chose locations that the public wouldn’t be at any risk in and made sure I took precautions so that no one involved in production and contributing could be harmed.
Another important part of planning is booking necessary equipment and coming to agreements and signing contracts with all the people involved so that people don’t back, equipment that you need is actually available at the time you need it and you have all the necessary permissions and don’t get turned away for example filming in a shopping centre if you don’t get prior consent and arrange time and day then you can be turned away. In my production I used my own camera so didn’t need to book one however checked in advance then the Blue room was available and arranged my interviews in advance.
Booking is part of Production Scheduling which is necessary in productions so that everything is planned before so you can keep an eye on how the production is progressing and to organise when what is being done so you can get things done more quickly- sometimes there is a separate filming schedule other times it can be incorporated into the production schedule.
Part of production scheduling also includes Call Sheets, call sheets are basically like a list of who and what is needed at what time on whatever date for example the list of equipment for production, props and people needed and it says where they need to be at what time and sometimes may say what scenes are being filmed.
Before filming can begin a Script, Storyboard and Shooting Script need to be made. The script is who says what at what point and the stage directions for them, its important to know what your saying rather than add lib at very least in fiction though parts of factual programmes if not fully are scripted and in interviews questions are mostly prewritten though the interviewer may improvise questions based on responses. The Shooting Script is basically like the script but the list of shots that are needed and descriptions, they specify camera angles etc. From the script and shooting script a Storyboard is made, it is a visual representation of what will be filmed, drawings of the scene and a brief description of what is happening is sometimes written underneath, it is used to show what type of shot it is for example close up shot the subject will be big where as in a long shot the subject will be smaller, these are used so people know what they are filming and can see what it will look a little like and how it is planned to be edited together, though sometimes things change from the storyboard stage to editing depending on what footage is obtained. I used all 3 of these in my production though I adlibbed a little on an interview and one of my interviewees changed from who was originally planned so my back up interviewee did it instead so I needed to change my questions, my introduction and outro was scripted though. Also within the script the programme makers need to check nothing is offensive and that opinions are not stated as facts and that there is a generally balanced objective view in factual programmes and nothing harmful is shown in factual or fictional programmes or films.
And so this covers most of the things needed in pre-production though different productions may have special other requirements for example if you’re making a film where a character needs to ride a horse in one scene they may need lessons beforehand so that sort of goes into pre-production as it is before filming starts.
