I saw this a few days ago on my fb screen and print screened it.... can I just say WTF?? I am actually soo soo soooooo angry at the American studios, constantly taking a famed foreign film and turning it into crap and still claiming it half the time to be their own work!!
"Best American horror film of the last 20 years" HOW on EARTH is it an American film when its a re-make of Sweedish classic Let The Right One In, ok I've not personally seen this re-make though I will say the trailer does look good and like the Americans have put a very different spin on it however it is NOT an American film.
This trend keeps growing and growing, first it started with the Japanese film industry, Ringu, Ju-on (the Grudge), Chakushin Ari (One Missed Call), then it was China's turn to be massacured with the Eye films, though I do believe at least one of the Pang brothers was involved in this re-make project and Jessica Alba doesn't do that bad of a job in it it still falls in comparison to the original.
Then was Korea's turn with films such as The Tale Of 2 Sisters (aka The Univited), ok I'm not a big fan of the Korean horror industry, they are GOOD at lighting, set design and scoring HOWEVER all the techniques are much more suited to romance rather than horror, I found myself soo bored by the Korean version I turned it off halfway through, dont get me wrong I like progressive horrors with some major drama and compelling characters in them, but this just takes wayyyy too long to get into and the scares are basically a girl with long hair crawling onto a bed... wow... never seen that before in an Asian film! lol but its done also so painfully slowly it couldn't even scare a child if I showed my 9 year old bro Leo it he would of just either got really bored with it or laughed his dead off. I know Hitchcock (ok onto a british guy for a sec) said to shoot your romances like horrors and your horrors like romances, and I do really like that statement, but seriously?? Ok back to topic, its not a good film to start with and the re-make is just pitiful and as for the casting of Arielle Kebbel in the re-make, dont get me wrong I do like her, but seriously just stick to the teen comedies n rom-coms aka what your good at, some people just dont work at all when they cross genres.
Now Sweeden even is taking a bashing, ok not famed particularly for horror but for their sweet stories about personal growth and showing things that question your morality, ever heard of The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo? Of course you have, who hasn't with the books flying off shelves and the film selling out all over the place across the world since its release in 2009 - YUP 2009 and guess what? http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1913734/ YUP re-make allready completed!! set to come out 2011, hopefully America will take a kick up the ass with this one as people who have seen the original which is actually a large number this time will slate it, I just only hope that people who hear of the American version dont choose to watch that over the Sweedish superior version just because of the subtitle issue :/ x ok I'm not necessarily a fan of certain lanuages, Sweedish is a pain to watch and listen to for me but hey I loved the original, its got soo many elements to it and its shocking, ok in places it does go a little to far in my opinion buy hey filmmaking is about breaking down borders and expression and creativity, something America severly lacks, the largest country in the world yet one of the most lacking in creativity :/ x. Also the cast of this is just a monstrousity really! Who appear in some really bad films, can I just say Rooney Mara, WHAT THE HELL??? How did she go from appearing as tiny tinyyyyyy lil backing characters like in Urban Legend (one of America's most original slashers... however it was based on legends that have existed for years and had many films made about them -_- ) from being in soo many fairly high profile films in the last few years, I dont understand it and I DONT like it. Like her playing Nancy in the re-make of NOES (Nightmare on Elm Street to you non-horror fans), I swear, I wanted to tell Jake Earl Herly or however you spell his name coz frankly I DONT care about him, other than the fact he ruined the iconic image that is Freddy Krueger, to piss off and let me slash her up in that film her acting was soo bad, as was most of the cast, they have 2 decent members in the NOES 2010 cast Katie Cassidy, who they kill off first, wasting her talent and Aaron Yo, though I cant even see him on cast list he appears for about 2 mins on a V log thing.
Ok I don't like re-makes in genral, as you can see by my (believe me V concervative short) rant about NOES 2010, however I dont mind when a country re-makes its own film, I really dont, it drives attention back to the originals most of the time and I think its good to bring old classics to a new generation, and whats wrong with taking something and attempting (even if you fail) to make it better? HOWEVER when you take an idea from another country and re-make it and parade it around as if its something original its a NO NO, just because the other countries aren't as rich as America doesn't mean they shouldn't get recognition for their creativity and brillence, even if they do actually get known to be a re-make some lazy ass people cba to read subtitles so get a toned down less interesting version of the film and that is then their impression and expirence of the original country's film industry, and I think thats unfair.
In short... DOWN WITH RE-MAKES! oh and now I actually can buy stuff online with latest bank card I plan to get a T-shirt that says that on V soon
ok I just spent 15 mins looking to try and find image of T-shirt i wanted n now i cant find it :/ x
